Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur have redesigned the process of producing bio-jet fuel from plant-based biomass, therefore supplying the aviation industry with cheaper, cleaner fuels that have the potential to revolutionise the energy sector.

The team created a readily available iron-based catalyst and used several non-edible oils and waste biomass to make the bio-jet fuel manufacturing process economical, resolving a problem that has filled the aviation industry for decades. The worldwide aviation sector is extremely energy-intensive and nearly reliant on petroleum-based fuels, with an estimated daily fuel consumption of more than 800 million gallons.

According to the researchers in the journal Sustainable Energy and Fuels, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry in London, the new plant-based sustainable bio-jet fuels could provide a competitive alternative to conventional petroleum fuels and have the potential to play a significant role in greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
Research focuses on generating aviation fuel under moderate reaction conditions using earth-abundant Fe/SiO2-AI2O3 catalyst, achieving reusability up to 10 cycles in bio-jet fuel presence. Research shows the catalyst’s strong acidity and textural features under mild conditions, supported by DBT PAN-IIT Centre for Bioenergy.
