Sony PlayStation VR2 to be released in early 2023

Introduction

After a protracted wait and a few leaks, Sony has provided a release date for its forthcoming VR console. Early 2023 will see the release of the PlayStation VR2,” according to tweets and Instagram posts from Sony.

The PlayStation VR2 was first introduced by the business last year. The PlayStation VR2 headgear and controllers, which have a comparable black & white dual-tone style to the current-generation PlayStation 5 platform, were initially shown off by the company earlier this year.

Although PlayStation has provided hardware information regarding the future virtual reality gadget, pricing has yet to be disclosed. Sony claims that the PS VR2 will have a 4000 x 2040 OLED screen resolution with a frequency of 90 or 120 Hz refresh rates, allowing for fluid gaming navigation.

The headset’s 110-degree FOV (field of view) will be the same as its predecessor’s. Additionally, a 1080p resolution cinematic mode broadcasts the PlayStation 5 user interface and non-VR games on a virtual screen while operating at 24Hz as well as 60Hz.

Early 2023 is the projected release date for PlayStation VR2

Two VR2 Sense controllers are included with the PlayStation VR2 headset, and they share the same visual aesthetic that defines the Dualsense controller for the PS5. The haptic feedback & adaptive triggers used in these controllers will enhance gaming immersion.

After providing a first peek earlier this year, Sony has formally revealed an “early 2023” release window for their PlayStation VR2 headset. With a maximum of 4K video resolution, an impressive 120 HZ frame rate, a 110-degree angle of view, and more than 20 VR games on launch, including No Man’s Sky & Resident Evil Village, the second edition of PlayStation’s flagship virtual-world headset promises to provide a considerable boost.

Foveated rendering, an integrated eye tracker that lessens the picture quality of the peripherals to save rendering workload, and on-device cameras that give motion-tracking and a view of the surroundings are additional features.

The VR2 offers two separate modes for its experience:

VR & Cinematic Mode. In VR Mode, gamers can play games in a 360-degree virtual environment with a video resolution of 4000 x 2040 and a frame rate of 90 Hz or 120 Hz.

Players can see the PS5 system, user interface, and all non-VR games & media content on a simulated movie screen while in Cinematic mode. Content viewed in the cinematic mode will have a 1920 x 1080 HDR video resolution and a 24/60Hz and 120Hz frame rate.

New capabilities of Sony PlayStation VR2

Seeing Through:

The See-Through View is one of the more innovative functions of the Sony PlayStation VR2. Users can observe their surroundings when using the headset, as the business noted in its blog post. Users who want to observe their surroundings without removing their headsets may find this helpful function. It results from the Sony PS VR2’s integrated front cameras. Users can turn the See-Through View on or off by pressing the feature button on the headset.

Broadcast mode for PlayStation VR:

The PlayStation VR2 controller and built-in cameras also allow players to customize their gaming environment. The PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers let players increase and set the play area while the cameras scan the space to activate this capability. Users will receive a warning when they cross the play area’s boundaries while engaging in a game once it is set up.

Cinematic and VR modes:

The VR Mode & the Cinematic Mode are additional features that Sony has made public. Players may enjoy VR game material in VR Mode in a 360-degree virtual environment. In a movie with a resolution of 4000 × 2040 and a frame rate of 90Hz/120Hz, the content will be shown at a resolution of 2000 x 2040 for each eye.

In Cinematic Mode, gamers can see the PS5 system, user interface, and all non-VR games and media files on a simulated movie screen. The content displayed in the cinematic mode will have a 1920 x 1080 HDR resolution and 24 and 60 frames per second (Hz) frame rate.

Pros and cons on PlayStation VR2:

With its simple setup, inside-out tracking, enhanced controls, advanced haptics, and a high-quality OLED screen with eye-tracking functionality, the PlayStation VR2 represents a generation leap for VR headsets. It’s an excellent option for PlayStation 5 players because of its cozy style and outstanding visual quality.

It does have significant shortcomings, though, such as a constrained onboarding process, a lack of built-in sound, and a lack of non-gaming software. The PSVR2 set a high benchmark for both value and quality despite these drawbacks.

PROS CONS
Modern controllers with excellent haptics and ergonomics Insufficient onboarding expertise
Easier installation thanks to just one USB-C cable The controller ring might not be comfortable for some (more significant) users.
An OLED display of superior quality and deep black levels No integrated audio
Comfortable design that fits people with different facial shapes & glasses Systems are locked down; neither unapproved programs nor PC communication is supported.
Excellent value when combined with a PS5

Conclusion

Sony supplied the PlayStation VR 2 release window, and we may anticipate it in the first few months of 2019. Sony and PlayStation supplied this early 2023 window on several social media platforms.

The PSVR headset’s subsequent iteration will include 4K HDR images, new controllers, and a variety of PlayStation 5-compatible titles.  The light-up mic form is gone from the recently released PlayStation VR 2 controls in favour of a round, orb-like structure.

The so-called “Sense Controllers” have a similar shape to more traditional VR controllers like the Quest 2 from Oculus and have haptic feedback, which uses clever vibrations to simulate touch. The program includes finger touch recognition, improved controls, and adaptive triggers.
